Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje (now in Macedonia). His father, Nicola Boyaju, was a simple businessman. Mother Teresa’s real name was Agnes Gonza Boyajiju. 

In the Albanian language, Gonjha means flower bud. When she was only eight years old, her father went off from the world, after which all the responsibility of her upbringing fell on her mother, Drana Boyaju. She was the youngest of five siblings.

At the time of her birth, her elder sister was seven years old, and her brother was two years old; the other two children passed away in infancy. She was a beautiful, studious and hardworking girl.

 Along with their studies, he loved singing. She and her sister were the lead singers in the nearby cathedral. She believed that when she was only twelve years old, she realized that she would devote all her life to human service, and at the age of 18, she decided to join the ‘Sisters of Loreto’.

By the year of 1970s, she became well-known for her humanitarian work for the poor and the helpless people, mentioned in several documentaries and books by Malcolm Muggeridge, such as Something Beautiful for God. She was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Bharat Ratna and India’s highest civilian honour in 1980.

 The mission of the Missionaries of Charity continued to expand during Mother Teresa’s life, and by the time of her death, it controlled 610 missions in 123 countries. This included hospices/homes for patients with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, as well as soups, kitchens, counselling programs for children and families, orphanages and schools.

In 1928, at the age of only 18, she left home to live with the Loreto sisters, the same Mother Teresa who also learned English and went on to become a Christian missionary.

 Loreto used the English language to teach children in India on the pretext. She never again saw his sisters and his mother after being evicted from the house. His family lived in Skopje until 1934 and then moved to Tirana, Albania.

After this, Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 and studied in Darjeeling; she learned Bengali at St. Teresa’s School near the Himalayan hills and taught children there. On May 24 1931, she got the title of Sanyasini for the first time. And after that, she changed her original name to Mother Teresa.

On December 19 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize for humanitarian work. Visva Bharati Vidyalaya gave him the Deshikottam title, the highest title she got. The Catholic University of America honoured him with a doctorate degree. 

She received the title of ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in 1962. In 1988, she was awarded the title ‘Eyer of the British Empire’ by Britain. Banaras Hindu University honoured him with the degree of D-lit.

The Death of Mother Teresa

With increasing age, her health was also getting worse. In 1983, at the age of 73, she had a heart attack for the first time. At that time, Mother Teresa was in Rome to meet Pope John Paul II. 

After this, in the year 1989, she suffered a second heart attack and was fitted with an artificial pacemaker. In 1991, after pneumonia in Mexico, his heart problems increased. After that, her health continued to decline. On March 13 1997, he stepped down as the head of the Missionaries of Charity and died on September 5 1997.
